Week 08 - These grannies are bussin, respectfully
ART
The level itself has been elongated since we wanted a little more time in this gameplay to really get that race going on track. The library section has been branched out further and has an even better flow to it.
Our grannys have awoken from their beauty sleep and are close to getting their looks finished! We have implied our base grandma model and have started modeling the accessories and different hairstyles according to their iconic looks in the UI! Each have their colour, as it adds to the readability of these unique looking queens of old.
In the beginning we have a small tutorial section on the tv screen that helps you out what buttons to press when you start playing which was a fun touch that one of our artists came up with!
We are currently testing our wall off death and scratched the idea of this distorted feeling to reality. Instead we went for a good ol' wool bol with pins to get more in the grandma theme!
And for our revenge mechanic we added a ghost grandma that can reclaim her life to return to the game if you died too early.
Revenge!
We’ve now fully implemented the revenge mechanic! We're currently in the playtesting phase, fine-tuning and balancing it since it's a brand-new feature in our game.
Additionally, we've added a pause functionality: players can now pause the game mid-session if they need to take a break.
During testing, we also encountered some performance issues. After investigation, our developers identified the problem, it was related to rendering. They created a detailed report for the artists, who were then able to resolve it effectively.
Lastly, we introduced a new feature that allows the camera speed to dynamically adjust during gameplay. This will help us ease players into the pace of the race more gradually, creating a smoother and more immersive experience.
SOUND
We've given our game a complete audio overhaul today! The UI now feels responsive with satisfying click and hover sounds across all menus. We've added distinctive background music for the main menu, victory screen, and game over screen to set the right mood for players.
In gameplay, winning and losing now have proper audio payoff with victory fanfares and defeat sounds that match the emotional moments. The special zones around the map (acceleration, deceleration, and fly zones) now give audio feedback when players enter them, making their effects more intuitive.
We also fixed the annoying problem of sounds overlapping when multiple players hit a zone at once - now the sound plays only when the first player enters and smoothly fades out when everyone leaves. This makes the audio much cleaner in our 4-player matches where things can get chaotic.
Overall, these sound improvements make the game feel more polished and responsive, with audio that properly reinforces the gameplay.
